Google Business Profile Suspended? Here's What to Do

A suspended Google Business Profile disappears from Maps and local search instantly. Here's why it happens, how to fix it, and how to protect yourself going forward.

A Google Business Profile suspension is one of the worst things that can happen to a local business’s online visibility. Your listing disappears from Google Maps. You fall out of the map pack. Calls that were coming in every day stop. And the reinstatement process is more bureaucratic and opaque than most business owners expect.

Here’s what actually causes suspensions, what the reinstatement process looks like, and how to protect yourself going forward.

What are the two types of Google Business Profile suspensions?

Google issues two types of GBP suspensions that work very differently.

A soft suspension means your listing remains visible on Maps and in search, but you’ve lost the ability to manage it. You can’t respond to reviews, post updates, or edit your information. From the outside, nothing looks wrong. From your dashboard, you’ll see a notice requiring review or re-verification.

A hard suspension means your listing is completely removed and no longer appears in search results or Maps at all. If customers try to find you on Google, you effectively don’t exist. This is the more damaging type and the more difficult to recover from.

Why does a Google Business Profile get suspended?

Most suspensions are triggered by Google’s automated systems, not a human reviewer — which means they can hit legitimate businesses based on patterns that look suspicious, even when nothing was actually wrong.

Keyword stuffing in the business name is the single most common cause. Adding keywords to your business name that aren’t part of your actual legal name is a policy violation. “McAllen Roofing Company | Storm Damage | Hail Repair” is not a business name — it’s a keyword list. Your GBP name should match exactly what’s on your business license and signage.

Address issues include a PO box listed as a physical address, a virtual office or mailbox store address used to appear closer to a target city, or multiple businesses at the same address flagging your listing even if you’re the legitimate one.

Rapid profile changes — changing your business name, category, and phone number all at once — signal that a different business may have taken over the listing.

Category or description violations include restricted categories, unverifiable claims (“best in the area”), or URLs and phone numbers added to fields that shouldn’t contain them.

Third-party attacks — competitors reporting your listing as fraudulent — can trigger a review that sometimes results in temporary suspension.

How do I submit a Google Business Profile reinstatement request?

Before submitting anything, identify why the suspension happened. Review Google’s GBP policies against every field in your profile. Check your business name for keyword additions. Verify your address is legitimate and matches your business license. Fix any clear policy violations before submitting — a reinstatement request for a profile that still violates policy almost always results in denial.

Once the underlying issue is fixed, go to the Google Business Profile Help Center and search for “appeal a suspended profile.” Submit the reinstatement form with:

  • Your business name, category, and address or service area
  • A brief explanation of what your business does and why you believe the suspension was an error
  • Supporting documentation: business license, utility bill at the business address, photos of your signage, lease agreement, or anything that establishes legitimacy

The more documentation you provide, the better. A reinstatement request with three supporting documents has a meaningfully better outcome than one with none. Google’s review typically takes 3 to 10 business days for a first submission.

What should I do while waiting for GBP reinstatement?

A hard suspension can mean zero local visibility for weeks. While you work through the process:

Check your organic rankings. Your website is separate from your GBP. If you have organic rankings, those still produce traffic. Running paid search ads during suspension can partially compensate for lost map pack calls.

Tell your existing customers. Long-term customers who can’t find you on Maps may assume you’ve closed. A direct message or email explaining the technical issue maintains trust and keeps referrals active.

Launch a temporary Google Ads campaign. Even a modest budget targeting your main keywords can fill part of the gap while you wait.

Document everything. Screenshot the suspension notice, the date it appeared, and any communications from Google. This documentation matters in extended appeals.

What mistakes delay Google Business Profile reinstatement?

Submitting multiple requests back to back. If you submit, don’t hear anything, and submit again the same day, Google’s system can treat this as a reset — restarting the review timer. Wait the full review period before following up.

Not fixing the underlying issue first. The most common reason for repeated denials is that the profile still contains the problem that caused the suspension. Fix first, then request reinstatement.

Vague explanations. “My business is legitimate and I don’t know why this happened” doesn’t help reviewers. Be specific: what your business does, where it operates, how long it’s been operating, and why you believe the suspension was an error.

Editing the profile while a review is active. Don’t change your business name, category, or address while a reinstatement is pending — changes can restart the process.

How do I prevent my Google Business Profile from being suspended again?

Keep your business name exactly as it appears on your business license — no keyword additions, no taglines, no service areas in the name field. Don’t use a virtual office or mailbox address unless you actually work from there. If you’re a service-area business, hide your address and set service areas instead.

Make profile changes gradually, not all at once. If you’re updating your phone number, hours, and category, spread those changes over a few days rather than simultaneously. Monitor your profile regularly — a suspension caught in week one recovers faster than one discovered after three months.

Review your profile access list periodically if employees or third parties have management access. An authorized user who inadvertently violates policy can trigger the same outcome as intentional abuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Google Business Profile reinstatement take? Typically 3 to 10 business days for a first submission. Complex cases or those requiring additional documentation review can take 4 to 6 weeks. Providing thorough documentation upfront is the only way to improve the timeline.

Can I still run Google Ads if my GBP is suspended? Yes. Your GBP and Google Ads account are separate systems. A suspended GBP does not prevent you from running search ads or Local Services Ads — and doing so during suspension is one of the best ways to maintain lead flow while waiting for reinstatement.

What happens to my reviews during a suspension? Reviews are not deleted during a suspension. When your profile is reinstated and becomes visible again, your review history returns with it. In a hard suspension, reviews are temporarily invisible along with the listing but reappear upon reinstatement.

My reinstatement request was denied. What do I do? Review the denial for any explanation. Fix any remaining policy issues. Gather additional documentation. Resubmit with a more detailed explanation and more supporting evidence. You can also try to reach a human reviewer through Google Business Profile support, though response times vary.

Someone is impersonating my business on Google. Can that cause my real profile to be suspended? It can complicate your case, but it shouldn’t cause a suspension of your legitimate profile. Report the fraudulent listing through Google Business Profile Help Center, document when you reported it, and include that documentation in any reinstatement request if your profile is affected.

Should I create a new GBP listing if my current one is suspended? No. Creating a duplicate listing while a suspension is pending is itself a policy violation and makes your reinstatement case significantly harder. Work through the reinstatement process for the existing profile — creating a new one is not a shortcut.
